Youth Program Registration Now Available
Youth delegates from your city or town are invited to join us at the 4th Annual League Youth Program to be held at the League Annual Conference, Wednesday, September 2 at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort. Attendees will participate in their own sessions and activities, as well as have the opportunity to interact with local elected officials and learn more about the issues and challenges facing Arizona. Youth Commissions and Youth Advisory Boards from across the state are invited to participate.

Surprise Opens New City Hall
On June 16, Surprise celebrated the opening of a new City Hall building at 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza. The new 136,000-square-foot building was designed with providing quality customer service in mind. From the entrance of the four-story building, it is easy to spot the Development Services Center, a one-stop shop for annexation proposals, zone changes, conditional use permits, grading and drainage, paving, new building construction, single family homes, and landscaping. Gilbert and Chandler to Dedicate Opening of Joint Water Facility
Officials from Gilbert and Chandler celebrated the completion of a joint water treatment plant that will provide each community with cost savings in addition to water.

The Santan Vista Water Treatment Plant at 3695 E. Ocotillo Road was dedicated at a ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 27. The public was invited to attend the event and tour the new facility located near Higley and Ocotillo roads in Gilbert. Read more
 
Tucson 4th of July Fireworks Saved Thanks to Public-Private Partnerships
Less than 24 hours after a local newspaper reported the City of Tucson would be forced to cancel its 4th of July fireworks display, Mayor Bob Walkup and Ward III City Councilmember Karin Uhlich were able to secure more than $65,000 in donations from private sponsors. As a result, Tucson's 4th of July Fireworks Celebration at "A" Mountain will be held this year, keeping alive a long-standing tradition. Read more

Innovative Surprise State of the City Address Earns Two National Awards
The City of Surprise has received national recognition for its innovative promotional video highlighting many of the city's top attractions.

The "City of Surprise Tourism Spot" received a Bronze Telly Award for Outstanding Achievement under the Travel/Tourism category. The 30-second promotion features many city amenities including the 25-court Tennis and Racquet Complex, Surprise Stadium, White Tank Mountains, local restaurants and museums. Read more
 
Deck of Cards Decides Cave Creek Election
The New York Times recently featured a story on a Cave Creek election that was decided by the luck of the draw. Incumbent Thomas McGuire and Adam Trenk both ran for a seat on the seven-member Cave Creek Town Council. Both received the same amount of votes: 660. After a recount, the results remained the same. Because the Arizona Constitution allows a game of chance to break a tie in an election, McGuire and Trenk each drew a card to settle the deadlock.
